Dallas Willard recommends letting the first thing upon waking be the 23rd Psalm or the Lord's Prayer. For thousands of years monks have started their day with Psalm 95: "Come, let us worship the Lord."

Now we roll out of bed and check Facebook. "Come, let us worship our social persona...." ?

This has to have an effect on our life.

Many iPhone owners run apps before getting out of bed

When you wake up in the morning, bleary-eyed and still in bed, do you reach for your phone to check Facebook or read an email? If you answered yes, you are not alone. According to a survey conducted by telecommunications hardware manufacturer Ericsson, 35% of respondents grab their iPhone or Android phone and launch a mobile app before getting out of bed.

Checking Facebook and other social networks is the most popular activity with 18% of people reading their news feed while still in the sack. This trend of early morning Facebook-ing may increase in the future as 20% of survey respondents expect to buy a new mobile phone in the near future. One with Facebook, we presume.

I feel so privileged for the time I have had to learn from this man. He truly is living what he teaches - a life that progressively takes on the character of Jesus.

There seems to me something odd and sad about using Twitter at Walden.

This comment makes sense within a view of the Kingdom of God, where we see God training us to reign with Him forever (Rev. 22:4-5). His desire is to share power—but only so much as our character is able to handle and use for creative goodness in His kingdom. So we must be tested, so that we can be awarded more sharing in His life. For we will only step forward in sharing His power if we are convinced we are ready to share it, and that it would be a good thing to do so.

This is deeply true and encouraging.
I think this holds as well for spiritual formation. Simone Weil: "No effort at prayer is ever wasted."

"Battlefield" has not been a good metaphor for Christians over the ages. Nor is it now. Our Master warned us, "Those who live by the sword will die by the sword"--be prepared for violence to bring violence in response. This is just as true when we are considering the violence of political rhetoric and political action.

Sure that, whatever it looks like practically, the mechanism is "beholding the glory of the Lord."
